48TH & CHICAGO

As some one who travels 40 miles, one way, to come to work, I think I am uniquely qualified to talk about the virtues of our neighborhood. One year ago I was offered the position of manager at Wells Fargo on 48th and Chicago. It was such a long drive, but I decided before I said no, I should at least check it out. I fell in love with the area. The local business people, the customers, the ambiance of the neighborhood, offset the drive. I am an advocate of what 48th and Chicago has to offer. This column will focus on what is happening, who is new, and hopefully entice you to visit our wonderful block of businesses and see all we have to offer "On the Corner".

Who's new?

How many times do you think you would have the opportunity to have a meal prepared for you by a White House Chef? Well at 48th and Chicago the answer is 3 times a day, 6 days a week. L'Ecosse is our newest restaurant, (echo-say) and the chef, David Macfarlane served as Bill Clinton's chef for several years, as well as cooking for several other dignitaries. David and his wife Christina, plus their sons, strive to serve you wonderful meals in a fashion reminiscent of some one entertaining at their home. The food is fantastic. Their motto is simple and straight forward... "All things delicious"

On a recent visit, a friend of mine and I both had a bowl of home made corn chowder, fabulous, a plate full of fresh roasted vegetables, my favorite, that were cooked to perfection and a signature dish; the fish and chips with David's homemade batter. This was a lot of food, but I could not stop eating, as every bite was better than the last. David makes virtually everything from scratch including; soups, dressings, and the tasty breakfast sausage. The staff at the bank wanted me to add that they love the breakfast at L'Ecosse. But from the number of them who order lunch daily, I would have to say that there is no dish that they have not enjoyed. And the prices are so reasonable.

Saturday breakfast / Sunday Brunch are very popular, so the Macfarlane's will reserve a seat for you. They are currently open for breakfast at 7 am, and lunch, serving the lunch menu until 7 pm. L'Ecosse is closed on Mondays.

Dinner service will start in June with an exciting dinner menu, and a wonderful wine and beer list launch.

Who's close by?

Mikes Corner Store is just a hop, skip, and a jump away at 56th and Chicago. Jason Wells, the owner, wanted to be part of our community and recently joined the neighborhood business association, SCABA, South Chicago Ave Business Alliance.

Jason is very involved and active in youth sports and community activities. He wanted to be a part of our vibrant neighborhood, and is a welcome addition

So what can you get by driving a few blocks to Mikes? Ice Cream, Latte's, Cappuccino, and a large variety of coffees. Rent a new release movie, get gyros, pizza by the slice, or a wrap. Hot dogs, nachos and cheese, or take home one of their "take and bake" pizzas. (Try the Chicago Ave; pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, and black olives) You can also pick up daily essentials, make copies, get basic office supplies, cooling refreshments, as well as Hallmark cards. We also must mention that Mike's has WEBKINZ, the popular stuffed animals that kids love, and you can find them at Mikes! Jason and his staff are very helpful and eager to serve your needs. They strive to add things you want, so don't hesitate to mention something you'd like to see added to there product mix.

What's changing?

Have you noticed the changes at the SE corner of 48th and Chicago? The new façade at Ken and Norm's is done, and as great it looks, wait until you go inside! We now can brag we have a Fine Wine & Spirits Shop in the neighborhood. The new owner, Arpat Nagy, is making significant changes and they show on the outside of the store, as well as inside with increased selections

There are now over 1000 wines available and the selection grows daily. There are wines from Portugal, South Africa, France, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Germany, New Zealand and of course most of your favorites from California, Oregon and other great USA growing regions.

Ken and Norm's also has added Belgian Ale, an ever expanding array of specialty beers, and added a new walk in cooler where you can build your own 6 pack.

The spirit selection is impressive; single malts, cognacs, brandy, the finest vodkas and rums in the world, all on our corner

The staff is well trained and willing to assist you in finding that perfect wine for that laid back weekend of entertaining, quiet lounging on the deck, peaceful summer picnics, or dinner with your friends. Please ask Andre', Kevin or John to make a suggestion. These guys know there stuff!
