Introductions were made around the table.
- Alex Moreno has taken an office in Chicago Plaza in September. He lives in the neighborhood and is a full-service agent.
- Kate Kellett from Health Partners stopped in. They are gutting and remodeling the Parkway Professional Building. They will provide family practice 8-5, urgent care 5-9. They also offer chiropractic and wellness care, with full lab and imaging services. A summer 2012 opening is planned.
Chris Geiger, Treasurer reported. Closing balance after festival bills is $3394.61.
Government affairs: There is a Business Day 2011 at City Hall, Wednesday, October 19 from 7:30-9:30. Cost is $15 and includes breakfast. Mayor Rybak will speak, then discussions re public safety, transit, regulatory services and economic development. All are encouraged to attend and provide your input.
Neighborhood News:
- FRNNG: Night On 48thwas well received. Discussed ideas for next year.
- Neighbors want more bike racks. Discussed working with the city to implement this. ~$150 was collected at the bike race to apply to this project. Need someone to take this on.
- Business Directory is underway. The FRN website has been redesigned by Dan Filbin and ready for actual programming. Still time to send business info and be included in the directory.
- Joe Senkyr reported that he was commissioned by Mixed Blood Theater to produce a cultural awareness video for Health Partners’ staff.
The November annual / dues meeting was discussed. It will be held at Pepitos with Joe providing the meal (buffet). We will need to put out an announcement. Dorothy Pitheon will be available to collect dues. The nominating committee will recruit a new treasurer- Alex Moreno volunteered. Need a secretary.
Holidays
- Amy at Spruce will be having a tree lot the weekend after Thanksgiving and would like to have other activities happening. Possibility for group ads etc.
- Dorothy was approved for $1500 to empty the planters and fill with winter greens.
Alex volunteered to work with Rich (webmaster) and Mike to revitalize our Facebook. Lots of ideas of ways to use this, particularly to encourage shop-local for the holidays; gift ideas from member businesses etc. We will present each member business with a window decal stating membership in the alliance. It will have the Facebook logo and our website.
Joe Senkyr was authorized to investigate replacing stop lights with stop signs to prevent cars and buses from speeding though the intersection to make the light.
Alise Morubio from Augsburg College will attend a future meeting to talk about sponsorship for an Indigenous Film Festival that will be held at Parkway Theater in March.

Government affairs: Dick reported there will be a CPED meeting November 8th. We should send reps.
Maude Lovell, the Executive Director of the Uptown Association spoke about their business group and ideas that they have used to grow the association and make it more valuable to its members.
Neighborhood News:
- FRNNG: Shannon Guernsey spoke about the Night On 48th, October 8. She brought posters and postcards for distribution. Recruiting items for the silent auction, items for swag bag, purchase wine for the wine raffle. Also would encourage businesses to sell advance sale tickets.
- True Colors will provide day care. They will have Jennifer Dewing available for autographs.
SCABA Fall Festival was successful with good music and program and good weather. Flea market sales were up from last year. We need more participants to plan and execute.
The Minneapolis St Paul magazine listed 48th and Chicago as #1 in their shopping issue.
Rich has been working on the website. Send him info to post.

- Paul Kinsley – 85 students 9th through 12th graders: arts and fuse charter school (46th and 4th) want to move ahead in neighborhood. Minnesota passed a law that allows Community experts to be involved in curriculum.
- They want to partner to be involved in the neighborhood/ want students out in the community.
- They are currently recruiting board members.
3 parents/ 3 teachers/ 1 community member (2 more needed)
- Car Show: Had perfect weather
- 51 cars showed
- Both sides of Chicago were used; good crowd

Government affairs: Dick reported:
- The city is discussing the new stadium location
- Elizabeth Glidden is checking on the defective light poles
- We need to be looking for other sources of revenue.
- We need a volunteer to research grant sources and write proposals
- Wells Fargo has a community reinvestment fund. Joyce will write a proposal with Mike and Dorothy for our events.
Neighborhood News:
- FRNNG: There is a team lined up to plan the parade for the June 4th event. Parade starts at 10 at 43rd and Oakland, turns at 48th, turns north on Elliot and ends at McRae Park. Businesses encouraged to participate. There will be bagpipes!
- Karie discussed the Wells Fargo parking lot. It can be used after hours by the public. There had been some problems with valet parking Friday and Saturday during business hours. The bank does not call the city and tow.
- Pepito’s Cinco de Mayo 5-mile race was a great success. 250 racers. Dorothy sold water. Watershed students had a table. Racers wanted this to be an annual event. Mentioned wanting something to do when they finished the race. Next year have music, vendors?
Bike Race Sunday July 24th: Mike is working with Jason from _________
- SCABA is the sponsor of the race and has pledged $1000. “Southside Sprint, sponsored by South Chicago Avenue Business Alliance”
- There will be multiple races. Individual businesses can sponsor individual races and will be announced along with the race. Bikes and Pieces will sponsor the kids race.
Rich has been working on the website. Mike Maxwell available to help.
- Need to send information to Rich to post
- Members should check their listing for any updates or changes. Link to the site.
- Will add info on parade, events
- Interested in creating a page where members can post specials, sales, etc
- We need to publicize our website on all our publicity and all our events: 48Chicago.org
Car Show on June 5th, 2011 (Sunday)
- ½ page flyers will be distributed to neighbors by Watershed School (4200 FRN households)
- Posters and flyers available for distribution and posting by businesses
- Postcards have been handed out to participants by MN T’z
- There will be a drawing basket – Each member can contribute items- tee shirts, gift certificates. Must be present to win.
John proposed purchasing a banner for SCABA with our name, logo and website to hang on the tent when we have a “booth”. Watershed students will create one.
Dorothy has volunteered again to do planters. There are 20 pots- most need new soil. She overwintered some spikes, but will purchase additional and plants. Will try some seeds. Sue F has marigold seeds from the neighborhood planting program to donate. Cost will be $1200, and will include maintenance. John moved, Ed seconded, passed. Money will be paid after receipt of city grant.
Mark Holdridge gave update on his summer concert schedule.
The date was set for the Fall Festival: Saturday, September 10th

- The city is beginning work on road repairs
- Street sweeping began Tuesday: Chicago Ave will have limited parking. This should be the week of May 2nd.
- $4000.00 will be coming from the city. This is our last year of our 3 year contract of $13,000.00 -- $5000/$4000/$4000
- Will need to be looking for other sources of revenue.
- Grants - less money available with more competitors
- Apply for project-specific funding (banners, events)
-Neighborhood News:
FRNNG: Kirk is heading parade and is looking for participants.
Cinco de Mayo: Race Sat May 7th Race begins at 11:00am. The race will start at 48th and end at the Bike Shop. There are ~500 runners; every runner gets a sash.
- Ads wanted from each business to attach to runner information.
- Opportunity for a table.
Bike Race Sunday July 24th: Mike is working with bike race groups
- SCABA is the sponsor of the race
Southside Spirit will handle all advertizing, registration and marketing.
- Each business will be announced by the announcer during the event.
- Route- The racers will start in front of MAH up to 49th, to 10th, Left to Elliot, Right to 47th, and back to Chicago.
- Race for fixed time 45 min - 90 min
- We will need street Marshalls/volunteers
- Jim will add Bike Race and Fall Festival to his Rib Fest ad (Aug 13th)
